Join GSSI for a special, volunteers-only trip to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Centre in Mexico– Nuestra Cabaña– where you will participate in their Real Mexico: Day of the Dead event!

Travel to the small town of Ocotepec (established in the 15th century as part of the Aztec Empire) for a whole week to participate in global Girl Guide and Girl Scout programming, volunteer in a community action project, and experience a unique, local Day of the Dead celebration, also known as Dia De Los Muertos in Spanish.

From October 31 to November 2, the streets will come alive with colorful ofrendas (alters), marigolds, and flickering candles as families celebrate the return to Earth of deceased relatives and loved ones. This United Nations-recognized holiday is of great cultural significance to Mexicans, so Nuestra Cabaña visitors will be able to engage in captivating traditions where people embrace death as a natural part of life, create a joyful atmosphere filled with laughter, music, and delicious culinary delights, and connect with the local community through a meaningful community action activity.

This volunteer-only trip is NOT just a fun trip for adult volunteers but is meant to serve as a training opportunity for volunteers who are interested in taking Girl Scouts to WAGGGS World Centres in the future with GSSI. The goal is for participating volunteers to learn, gain experience, and get comfortable with international travel to better help them as GSSI chaperones in the future.
